Swim Meet Tips
We would like to remind parents of both veteran and new swimmers alike of several important points concerning swim meets at Vienna Woods
- Please, Please, Please, TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE SOUND AND PUT IT ON VIBRATE!
- Flash photography is absolutely forbidden at the start of a race. If you want to take pictures of your swimmer, either turn OFF your flash or wait until the race has started to take a picture. Flash photography leads to false starts, which may lead to swimmers being disqualified.
- At the end of EACH and EVERY RACE, the kids should remain in the water until EVERYONE in their heat has finished. Sportsmanship is a big part of the swimming program at Vienna Woods, and it is decidedly unsportsmanlike to hop out of the water before everyone is finished. Often, swimmers also shake hands with the competitors in adjoining lanes. Remind your children of this practice.
- At the end of EACH and EVERY RACE, swimmers should return to their coaches for FEEDBACK! This is very important because coaches want to congratulate them and offer immediate praise and tips for their next race(s).
- If you are not an official or a swimmer, YOU DO NOT BELONG ON THE POOL DECK. The coaches are responsible for your children during a meet and they will get them where they need to be.
- If you are a swimmer, YOU BELONG IN THE TEAM AREA WITH THE TEAM. One of the coaches’ biggest problems at the developmental meets is finding swimmers for upcoming events. If your swimmer comes to visit, give them a quick hug and remind them they belong in the team area with their team.
- Sportsmanship is important (see above), and it’s customary to clap for good performances both by our team and the opposing team.
- PLEASE help CLEAN UP at the end of the meet. Many hands make for light work!
- AFTER THE MEET, be sure to tell your swimmer how much you enjoyed seeing them swim! Try to refrain from comments like, “What was your time?” or “What place did you get?” Rather, ask your swimmer how they think they swam and if the coach had anything to say about their race.
- Sometimes it’s really hard to swim a best time week after week, so encourage your swimmer to swim ALL of the events they can during the course of the summer instead of their favorite strokes every meet. The variety will help prevent placing pressure on them to repeat fast swims over and over during the short, 6-week season.
Disqualifications Every swimmer will disqualify (DQ) at one point or another during their swimming career. It’s a part of life and learning correct stroke techniques. While you and your child might be disappointed or upset about a DQ, it’s not the end of the world!
- All DQ details are shared with coaches after meets, and the coaches will work with your swimmer on correcting their technique during practices.
- Swimming meets are judged by trained Stroke and Turn judges, Starters and Referees. These officials must attend mandatory NVSL training and many are also certified USA Swim officials. Parents are NEVER to approach or talk to an official during a swim meet.
All participants, spectators, and officials are expected to follow the NVSL standards of conduct at all times.
